Robots, Real Robots

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

I went downtown to the Fall Festival of Bend Oregon today and checked it out.  Like most festivals there is the boring craft booths that try to sell you candles, pottery and imprints of leaves in glass and other odd trinkets you don’t see in your average department store.  There was one booth that held my attention for more than a quick glance.  That was the Robotics booth of the Mountain view High schools: Team #753, The High Desert Droids.

They were out there showing the public their robot creations and trying to raise money for their trip to Atlanta for the First competion where they challenge their robot against other Teams from around the country.

I got the chance to operate the robot, which was quite difficult and took 2 different joysticks to drive.  It shot a ball out the top which was also fun.  I got the hang of it, and got quite a few laughs out of it watching 5 year olds who had no idea how to drive the thing, ram it into the concrete sidewalk.   Good luck to these guys with their fundraising and I hope to hear that they win the championships next year.

Exploration Through Innovation

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

On the note of “exploration Through Innovation” I thought I would share my thoughts on SETI, the Search For Extraterrestial Intelligence.  I recently watched Contact and have been a fan of Carl Sagan’s work for a few years now.  If you have no clue what Im talking about I reccomend watching Contact, its a warner Brother’s film, based on Sagan’s Science fiction novel he wrote in 1985.  It is about an array of radio telescopes that are dedicated to detecting alien signals from space. It is really exciting because it is true, that we are scanning the skys for these signals, nothing has been found yet but on the grand scale of space, but i think we should keep looking indefinitely

The universe is a pretty big space. It’s bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So, if it’s just us, seems like an awful waste of space, right?

This is all really interesting stuff, we have found more than 200 exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, and I feel like soon we will know what these worlds are like.  I know that visiting these planets won’t happen in my lifetime, but It is exciting to think about the future of our species and what kind of exploration is possible for the human race.  I know Austin will enjoy this post!

Tim Durtschi Is “Going Green”

Since I didn’t use the moped to do anything but smile alot and burn out on some gravel, I can’t really say that my use of a moped cut down on my carbon emissions.  Although I could argue that the fun I had was equal to snowmobiling. By recreating using the moped instead of the Snowmobile, I did burn significantly less fuel than I would have towing my sled to the mountain and burning that wretched two-stroke that we have to deal with.
